Bird!
Today Cubby started barking like a mad man. Nothing unusual about that. But this time, his bird dog instincts were actually right on. There was a bird in the house!

Here is a flashback to Groundhog Day 2001 when Darren and I traveled from opposite coasts to meet in a tiny hamlet in western Pennsylvania called Punxsutawney.

I learned a few things that day.

On Saturday, we headed up to Bear Valley with our friends Leland, Kara, Ren, Linsey & Koa. Koa is Ren & Linsey's awesome dog. He also happens to be one of approximately 500 pure-bred Chinooks in the US.
The Bay Area Siberian Husky Club had a dog sledding event at the Tamarack Lodge and we stopped by to check it out.
Here is Leland driving with Koa pulling on the left.
Sunday was one of those days that makes you really appreciate living in San Francisco. Sixty degrees. No clouds. No wind. In January. A perfect day for splashing around in the water at Crissy Field.
First off, you should know that I'm not a huge art museum guy. But, I'm up for the occasional dose of culture so on Saturday Gretchen and I went to the new de Young Museum in San Francisco.
Here it is in a nutshell.
Go. But only on a quiet weekday.
My family and I took a trip to Marshall Fields in Chicago over Christmas. It opened in 1852 and is one of the largest department stores in the world. It was recently sold to Macy's, so you could say this was its last Christmas.
This is the Christmas Tree in the Walnut Room.

There is plenty to see and do at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. Even in November. When it's raining.
Here is the jelly fish tank at the aquarium. There is also an indoor rainforest & desert dome.
Scott and his family were nice enough to let us stay at their beach house in Pajaro Dunes on the Monterey Bay in Northern California.

Gretchen and some of her co-workers went boating on the San Francisco Bay.

We have had an unusual amount of rain here in Northern California lately. So much so, that it caused a pretty substantial land slide. It closed Highway 1 two miles south of the Lucia Lodge, where we stayed on our recent trip to Big Sur.
After ringing in the new year with friends in Capitola, CA, Gretchen and I headed down the coast to Big Sur, a beautiful stretch of coast between Monterey and Santa Barbara. California Highway 1 between Monterey and Big Sur has to be the most senic drive in the country. If you ever get the chance to drive it, do it!
We strolled through Chicago's Navy Pier Tuesday, expecting to see the usual crowds and stores catering to tourists but was plesantly surprised by a very well done stained glass exhibit. And it was free!

The Christmas tree in Union Square (San Francisco, CA) is one of the biggest I've ever seen. Only a tree that big could sport ornaments as big as your head.

Sierra at Tahoe has plenty of snow. It was a great day for trying out new skis and getting the rust out of my legs!

Halloween at the beach house

It was a crazy night of beer and bingo with the locals.
Here are some photos from the T-Mobile International Pro Cycling Race held today in San Francisco, CA
