Land Slide!
We have had an unusual amount of rain here in Northern California lately. So much so, that it caused a pretty substantial land slide. It closed Highway 1 two miles south of the Lucia Lodge, where we stayed on our recent trip to Big Sur.
Now, I was expecting a few boulders, but a serious chunk of land had literally slid right off the mountain. (See the brown swath on the mountain in the distance.)
The crane clearing the debris on the road gives you an idea of the scale we're talking about here.
The locals told us that land slides have been a problem in that spot for about 15 years. They seemed a little tired of talking about it actually.
In the course of a few minutes in the local general store, the clerk had to explain to at least three sets of travelers that, "Yes, the road is closed. No, there isn't a detour. Yes, you'll have to drive an hour north to Monterey to get around it. Didn't you see the signs 20 miles back?"
